The world's first 200mm MEMS production line completed

STMicroelectronics, one of the world's largest semiconductor suppliers and a leader in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) products, recently inaugurated a new 200mm (8-inch) MEMS semiconductor wafer production line at the Agrate plant in the suburbs of Milan, Italy.

ST is the world's first major MEMS manufacturer to manufacture MEMS products using 200mm wafers. The new line will reduce the unit cost of the product, while accelerating the popularity of existing applications and the development of the new MEMS market. In computer, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and industrial applications, the ability to measure or monitor the motion and tilt of objects helps to save energy for targeted applications, making electrical equipment easier to use, while also making the console more interactive. Authenticity has risen to a new level, as MEMS devices can take advantage of the electrical and mechanical properties of silicon at the same time, so MEMS products are rapidly expanding into these applications.

“This huge investment in the construction of a 200mm production line underscores ST's commitment to build a competitive manufacturing base in Italy,” said Pietro Palella, general manager of STMicroelectronics Italy. “We transferred existing manufacturing technology to the Far East. In order to keep up with the development trend of the global manufacturing market, we are constantly making full use of the talent advantage of Europe. The new manufacturing facilities strengthen ST's leading position in this most promising market. Our MEMS technology was originally in Developed by the design center near Castelletto, it will remain our innovation base for MEMS technology, and now we are very proud that Agrate has the world's most advanced MEMS production line."

"According to market forecasts, the MEMS market will grow by about 50% between 2005 and 2010. It is one of the most promising markets in the semiconductor industry in the world. Our new advanced new production line built in Agrate will help. The company strengthens its leadership in this technology field,” Benedetto Vigna said. So far, ST has invested about $40 million to transform a previous 150mm (6-inch) production line into a state-of-the-art MEMS line. The new production line currently covers an area of approximately 1,300 square meters and employs more than 100 people to produce MEMS products. It also supports MEMS R&D activities at Castelletto. The footprint of the MEMS line will eventually expand to 2,500 square meters to meet market demand.
