Chicago FD assists CPD with protesters

The demonstrators were calling for racial justice and reform in policing practices. Several dozen people were arrested during the protests, many of them involved in a sit-in that blocked the middle of the street. Their goal was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country. Thousands of protesters marched from the Chicago Police headquarters on 35th and Michigan to McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held their annual meeting. With over 14,000 law enforcement officers in attendance, the event is one of the most significant in the field. The demonstration was organized by local community groups demanding systemic change in how police interact with communities of color. "We want our voices to be heard, to show the strength of this coalition, and to emphasize that Black lives matter," said protester Maria Hadden. "We are pushing for less funding for policing and more investment in community services." A separate group also staged a sit-in, blocking traffic at Cermak and Indiana Avenue. Police eventually arrested about a dozen protesters after they refused to move.
