HORIBA, Ltd. introduces new model for particle size measuring device

On August 29, 2007, Horiba Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is set to introduce a new model, the "LA-950V2," designed for measuring particle size distribution using laser technology. This advanced instrument is capable of analyzing not only powders but also mist-like particles such as sprays, slurry particles, and more. The LA-950V2 features five different sample preparation methods and eight interchangeable accessories, making it possible to measure previously challenging materials with greater accuracy and ease. This model is ideal for research and development as well as quality control in industries involving ceramic powders, resins, adhesives, catalysts, abrasives, and other similar materials. The standard price for the basic model is 9.8 million yen, offering excellent value for its advanced capabilities. The new model introduces four additional sample preparation methods beyond the traditional water and ethanol dispersion approach. These include (1) direct injection using tap water under pressure, (2) large-volume dispersion, (3) organic solvent-based dispersion, and (4) a no-circulation system. Method (1) allows for direct injection of the sample into the dispersant without the need for a separate container or liquid injection steps, streamlining the process. Method (2) uses five times the volume of dispersant compared to the standard method, enabling the analysis of larger sample quantities in a single measurement. This significantly improves reproducibility, especially when dealing with samples prone to error or those containing mixed particle sizes. Method (3) offers the use of organic solvents, which is particularly beneficial for samples that are insoluble in water or require stable dispersion in non-aqueous environments. Method (4) involves the use of specialized accessories, including batch containers, slurry holders, and dry measurement units. These allow for flexible testing, whether working with small volumes, magnetic samples, or dry powders. The LA-950V2 covers a wide measurement range, from 10 nm up to 3 mm, and completes a full measurement cycle—including dispersant injection, particle size distribution, and system cleaning—in approximately one minute. Thanks to an upgraded high-power pump and the same optical system as the previous model, measurement speed has been significantly improved. This makes the device highly suitable for quality management applications where frequent testing is necessary. Additionally, the accessories can be installed without tools, enhancing usability in research settings where samples are frequently changed. Overall, the LA-950V2 represents a major advancement in particle size analysis, combining versatility, efficiency, and user-friendliness in a single instrument.
