HORIBA, Ltd. introduces new model for particle size measuring device

On August 29, 2007, Horiba Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is set to introduce a groundbreaking new model, the "LA-950V2," designed for measuring particle size distribution using laser diffraction technology. This advanced system is capable of analyzing not only powders but also mist-like particles such as sprays, slurry particles, and other challenging sample types. With five different sample preparation methods and eight optional attachments, the LA-950V2 offers enhanced flexibility, making it possible to measure previously difficult-to-analyze materials. The new model is ideal for applications in research and development, as well as quality control across industries like ceramics, resins, adhesives, catalysts, and abrasives. The standard price for this model is 9.8 million yen. In addition to the traditional method of dispersing samples in water or ethanol, the LA-950V2 introduces four additional sample preparation techniques: (1) direct injection using tap water, (2) large-volume dispersion, (3) organic solvent-based dispersion, and (4) a non-circulating system. These options provide greater versatility depending on the nature of the test sample. Method (1) allows for direct injection of the dispersant through pressurized piping, eliminating the need for separate solution preparation and liquid injection steps. This streamlines the process and reduces the potential for errors during setup. Method (2) uses five times the volume of dispersant compared to the standard approach, enabling the analysis of five times the sample amount in a single measurement. This significantly improves reproducibility, especially when dealing with samples that are prone to measurement errors or contain a mix of particle sizes—offering up to two to three times better consistency than previous models. Method (3) utilizes organic solvents as the dispersant, making it suitable for samples that are insoluble in water or require an organic medium for stable dispersion. This expands the range of applicable materials and enhances measurement accuracy for such cases. Method (4) involves the use of various accessories, including batch-type container holders, slurry container holders, and dry measurement units. The batch container can handle 10 mL of sample solution, while the slurry holder is ideal for magnetic or easily changing samples. The dry measurement unit enables analysis of dry powders without the need for liquid suspension, broadening the system’s application scope. The LA-950V2 covers a wide measurement range, from 10 nm to 3 mm. The entire process—from dispersant injection to particle size distribution and system cleaning—can be completed in about one minute. By incorporating a high-power pump into the circulation system, the measurement time is significantly reduced while maintaining the same optical configuration as the previous model. This makes the system highly efficient and well-suited for quality management environments where frequent measurements are required. Additionally, the ease of attaching and removing accessories without the need for tools enhances its usability in research settings where samples are frequently changed. Overall, the LA-950V2 represents a major advancement in particle size analysis, offering improved performance, flexibility, and user convenience.
