UHV consists of 1000 kV and above AC and ±800 kV and above. It is the most advanced transmission technology in the world, with the advantages of long distance, large capacity, low loss and less land occupation.

The two twin brothers in the UHV family – UHV AC and UHV DC – are indispensable in the power grid. Only when they are used together and complement each other can they work better.

For example, 500 kV AC and DC are matched. Therefore, UHV AC and DC are also matched. If 500 kV DC is compared to a large vessel, then UHV DC is a 10,000-ton ship that needs to be docked in a safe and stable deep-water port. This deep-water port is the UHV AC grid. There is another analogy: UHV DC is like a direct flight, and it can't stop in the middle. The UHV exchange is a highway, which can quickly reach the destination, and there are exits in the middle, which can “stop”.

At present, the State Grid has built a total of “eight crosses and ten straight” UHV projects, and is under construction of the “Four Interchanges” UHV project. The length of the 23 UHV engineering lines under construction is 33,000 kilometers, and the substation (commutation) capacity exceeds 330 million kVA (kW).

The world's first 1000 kV UHV AC project, the Jindongnan-Nanyang-Jingmen exchange UHV test demonstration project, is almost 10 years old. The project maximized the role of grid resource allocation. During the dry season in winter, Hubei receives northern thermal power through UHV. During the summer flood season, UHV sent the surplus water and electricity from Southwest Sichuan to the North China Power Grid to alleviate the power shortage in Shandong and other places. This has truly achieved mutual benefit between the North and the South, and the integration of power grid resources. In the past 9 years, the Jindongnan-Nanyang-Jingmen exchange UHV test demonstration project has been operating safely and steadily.

Helping the development of the northwest region and adding momentum to the eastern and central regions

China's western and northern regions are rich in energy resources, and the implementation of large-scale "West-to-East Power Transmission" and "Nortel Power Transmission" is a major strategy for China's energy development.

To be rich, build a road first. And want to send electricity, there is no "road" - Channel , certainly not; want to send electricity on a large scale, there is no "highway" - large capacity channel , not even better. UHV is such an electric highway.

At present, UHV projects in the national grid operating area have accumulated more than 900 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to transporting about 290 million tons of standard coal from the air.

The eastern and central regions of China have developed economies with large electricity bases and high proportions. However, primary energy resources are scarce, land and environmental protection space are limited, and the pressure to ensure power supply is relatively high. At this time, the comprehensive advantages of UHV's large capacity, low loss, and less land occupation have emerged.

From January to August this year, UHV AC and DC trading capacity was 181.182 billion kWh, equivalent to 1 million units of 1 air conditioner operating under standard conditions for 28 years.

It can be said that without the long-distance transportation of UHV projects, the clean energy in the western region cannot be delivered, and local economic development cannot be discussed. If there is no UHV project to achieve a wide range of optimal allocation of energy resources, relying solely on distributed energy, the power supply situation in the eastern region cannot be changed.

Improve the ecological environment and drive industrial development, UHV goes abroad

At present, coal-fired power plants in East China and North China are densely distributed. The construction of large-capacity coal-fired pit power stations and new energy power plants in the western and northern energy bases will be carried out through the UHV project, and the comprehensive utilization efficiency of coal will be high and the emission control effect will be good.

The State Grid has eight UHV AC and DC projects included in the National Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan.

According to calculations, the eight UHV AC-DC projects plus Jiuquan-Hunan, Zalute-Qingzhou two UHV DC projects can reduce coal consumption by 180 million tons per year, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 320 million tons and sulfur dioxide by 880,000 tons. 940,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, significantly improving the environmental quality of the eastern and central regions.

The medium and long-term economic benefits of UHV power grids are significant, which can effectively drive upstream and downstream industries such as power supplies, electrical equipment, energy-using equipment and raw materials, promote the transformation and upgrading of equipment manufacturing industry, foster new growth points, form new kinetic energy, and promote coordinated development of regional economy. Improving the quality, efficiency and efficiency of economic development plays a very important role.

According to estimates, during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the total investment in power grid projects including UHV projects was 2.38 trillion yuan, driving power investment 3 trillion yuan, totaling about 5.4 trillion yuan, and the average annual GDP growth exceeded 0.8. percentage point.
