For the 24th year in a row, creative teams around the world have relied on Autodesk tools like 3ds Max, Arnold, Flame, Maya, and Shotgun to bring some of 2018’s most iconic films and TV shows to life. These tools played a key role in many of this year’s Academy Award-nominated projects, including the Best Visual Effects category.

Discover how Autodesk technology helped shape this year’s award-winning and nominated productions.

Best Visual Effects Nominees Rely on Autodesk Tools
Autodesk software was instrumental in creating all five films nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars: “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Christopher Robin,” “First Man,” “Ready Player One,” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

From previsualization to final rendering, Autodesk tools were used across multiple stages of production by thousands of artists from VFX studios across four continents. The software supported everything from virtual cinematography to post-production workflows, helping create stunning visuals that brought each story to life.

Here are some interesting facts about this year’s Oscar-nominated films:

  • “Avengers: Infinity War” featured over 2,680 VFX shots.
  • “Christopher Robin” included nearly 1,400 VFX shots.
  • “First Man” had 615 VFX shots.
  • “Ready Player One” contained more than 900 VFX shots.
  • In “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” over 1,200 artists and technicians worked globally to design vehicles, characters, and environments. The team also digitally scanned over 500 characters, props, and sets, including the train from the heist sequence. The film features 90 minutes of VFX content.

Congratulations to all the nominees this year. Your incredible work continues to inspire us and push the boundaries of what's possible with our technology. We're excited to keep supporting the next generation of creators as they bring their visions to life.
