Every awards season brings new films, series, and stars in the spotlight, but one constant remains — the use of Autodesk software to power incredible animation and visual effects (VFE) in entertainment.

For the 24th year in a row, creative teams around the world have relied on Autodesk tools like 3ds Max, Arnold, Flame, Maya, and Shotgun to bring the most memorable films and TV shows of 2018 to life. These same tools played a key role in many of this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar nominees.

Best Visual Effects Nominees Rely on Autodesk Tools
Autodesk software was at the heart of all five films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects: “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Christopher Robin,” “First Man,” “Ready Player One,” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

Artists from VFX studios across four continents worked together to create stunning visuals that brought these stories to life. Autodesk tools were used throughout the entire production pipeline, from previsualization to post-production and beyond.

Here are some fascinating facts about this year’s Oscar-nominated films:

  • “Avengers: Infinity War” features over 2,680 VFX shots.
  • “Christopher Robin” includes nearly 1,400 VFX shots.
  • “First Man” has 615 VFX shots.
  • “Ready Player One” contains more than 900 VFX shots.
  • For “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” over 1,200 artists and technicians from around the globe contributed to creating vehicles, character performances, and environments. The VFX team digitally scanned over 500 characters, props, and sets, including the train from the heist sequence. In fact, 90 minutes of the film is made up of VFX work.
