Wheeling crash with rescue 8/8/16

Wheeling firefighters, along with mutual aid units from nearby towns, responded to a reported car accident at 9930 Capitol Drive on Monday afternoon. A vehicle had plunged into a pond, with occupants reportedly trapped. Wheeling Fire Chief 2400 was the first to arrive and reported that the car was perched on top of a concrete retaining wall, with at least one person inside. Divers and boats were en route, but an urgent request was made for a tow truck to stabilize the vehicle so firefighters could safely extract the driver. As more units arrived, several were redirected once the situation became clear. The focus shifted to securing the SUV and preparing for the driver’s rescue. Fortunately, the driver was the only occupant, and the operation proceeded with careful coordination between emergency responders. Photos from the scene show the dramatic moment the car was secured by a tow operator, divers observing the situation from below, and firefighters using ropes to stabilize the vehicle. The driver was eventually removed and taken to safety, with paramedics providing immediate care. The incident began when the driver struck a fire hydrant and collided with two other vehicles before falling over the retaining wall into the pond. The crash site showed the aftermath, including a minivan and the SUV hanging precariously over the edge. Additional images captured the heavy wrecker lifting the car from the water, as well as firefighters decontaminating after the operation. The entire response involved multiple agencies working together to ensure the driver's safe recovery. More photos are available at shapirophotography.net.
