A series of protests took place in Chicago as police leaders from around the world met at McCormick Place for the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference. Demonstrators, many from community organizations, gathered to demand racial justice and call for changes in how law enforcement interacts with communities of color.
The protests led to several arrests, including a large sit-in that blocked traffic in the middle of the street. Hundreds of protesters marched from the Chicago Police headquarters to the conference venue, aiming to disrupt what is considered the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country. Over 14,000 officers attended the event, which sparked widespread demonstrations across the city.
Maria Hadden, a protester, expressed the group’s goals: “We want our voices heard. We want to show that Black lives matter and push this powerful organization to change its policies.†The demonstrators also called for less funding for policing and more investment in community services.
In addition to the main protest, other groups staged sit-ins and blockades, such as one at Cermak and Indiana, where police eventually arrested about a dozen individuals who refused to move. Several photos captured the scene, showing protesters blocking streets, holding signs, and engaging in peaceful resistance.
