Weta Digital Partners with Autodesk to Deliver Next Gen Cloud Production

WetaM cloud service to unleash Weta Digital’s Academy Award-winning proprietary tools powered by Autodesk Maya

It's hard to choose a favorite world created by the brilliant artists at Weta Digital. From the lush, alien landscapes of Pandora in "Avatar" to the epic realms of Middle Earth in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, each project is a masterpiece. Recently, I've been captivated by the redesigned Steppenwolf in Zach Snyder's "Justice League." These incredible worlds are brought to life thanks to Weta Digital’s cutting-edge visual effects and animation tools.

Known for its groundbreaking technological innovation, Weta Digital has spent years developing powerful, in-house VFX tools that only their own artists use. But now, that’s about to change. Through a partnership with Autodesk, these advanced tools are being made available to artists worldwide via WetaM — the first 3D visual effects pipeline delivered as a cloud service.

WetaM is built on the open API of Autodesk Maya, transforming Weta's exclusive tools into a cloud-based platform accessible through a subscription model. This means creators from all over the world can now tap into the same powerful workflows that helped bring iconic scenes from "Game of Thrones" season 8 and the giant from "The BFG" to life.

The changing industry landscape

This announcement marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Autodesk Entertainment & Media Solutions division. Since taking on my role earlier this year, I've been energized by the direction the industry is heading. The demand for high-quality, visually stunning content has never been higher, and it's only going to grow.

At the same time, the shift toward remote work and leaner production teams has pushed the industry to rethink how content is created. Creators are under more pressure than ever to deliver better results faster. Innovation isn't just about making tools more powerful — it's also about making them more accessible.

To meet this growing need, Weta Digital is launching a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) division. This initiative is a key part of their strategy to expand access to professional and prosumer tools across the global entertainment industry. By combining Weta's best-in-class toolsets with Autodesk Maya’s powerful platform, they're bringing industry-leading technology to the cloud — and to more artists around the world.

This move will not only drive creativity but also improve efficiency, helping fuel the endless demand for compelling stories. As we make these tools more widely available, I'm excited to see what amazing new worlds will be created next.

WetaM is set to launch a private beta this fall. For more details, visit www.weta-m.com.
