Post Traumatic Stress in the fire service

Excerpts from nbcdfw.com:

In the coming weeks, the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department is launching a new initiative aimed at improving access to mental health care for its firefighters and paramedics. The program will focus on addressing post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and other work-related psychological challenges.

The project was first introduced last year, with collaboration between DFR leadership and representatives from all three fire associations. A major catalyst for the program was the tragic suicide of a firefighter in 2017, which highlighted the urgent need for better mental health support within the department.

To make help more accessible, the department will distribute posters featuring a 24-hour hotline number, along with a website link and QR code. These materials will be placed in every firehouse, ensuring that emergency responders can quickly find the resources they need, regardless of the method they choose.

“Anonymity is key,” said Chief David Coatney. “It’s crucial for those who are struggling to feel safe reaching out without fear of judgment.”

Previously, mental health services for DFR members were primarily provided through the city’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). While this resource will still be available, the new initiative aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, especially among older firefighters who may have been reluctant to seek help in the past.

“There used to be a mindset where people just pushed through and didn’t talk about their struggles,” Coatney explained. “But attitudes have changed, and we’re working to ensure that no one has to face these issues alone.”

The department has partnered with several local mental health providers to offer a range of services, including counseling and addiction treatment. Additionally, DFR is rolling out resiliency training for current employees—something that has been part of cadet programs but not widely available to active personnel. This training helps firefighters and paramedics cope with the emotional toll of their demanding jobs.
