On Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019, before 6:30 a.m., Northbrook firefighters, along with mutual aid units, responded to a reported house explosion at 2563 Melanie Lane. Upon arrival, emergency crews found one residence fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading to the adjacent buildings on both sides. A Box Alarm was immediately called, followed by a second alarm that brought additional resources from most of Division 3 to the scene.
The original structure was completely destroyed, while one of the neighboring homes was severely damaged and nearly gutted. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the remaining exposure, with only minimal interior damage observed. Northbrook Tower 12 and Glenview Truck 14 deployed elevated master streams to control the fire, while Glenview Engine 8, Northbrook Engine 10, and Northbrook Squad 11 worked to suppress the flames from the ground.
Residents in the area were evacuated as a precaution, and local authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion. No injuries have been reported so far. The fire department is working closely with the community to ensure safety and provide updates as more information becomes available.
