As the demand for high-quality content continues to rise, the complexity of managing data, workflows, and teams in media and entertainment production has never been greater. With thousands of artists working across multiple departments and studios, each project involves countless shots, assets, and scenes. The tools they use often store data in different formats and locations, leading to fragmented workflows, slower productivity, and limited creative freedom.
However, a major transformation is now underway. We're redefining how the industry works by connecting every stage of the production process, unifying people, data, and workflows to unlock new possibilities for innovation and creativity.
**Autodesk Flow sets the stage for a new, open way of working**
At Autodesk University, I’m excited to share how we’re building a more connected, creative, and resilient future with **Autodesk Flow**, our industry cloud for Media & Entertainment (M&E). Flow is designed to accelerate connected workflows by placing **data—not files—at the center of collaboration**.
At its core, Flow uses an open API-powered cloud data model that structures all the data generated and used throughout the production pipeline. This allows teams to capture, reuse, and track data effectively, acting as the single source of truth for all assets, versions, and feedback in a production.
From individual artists to entire studios, everyone can work on tasks simultaneously, reducing delays and increasing efficiency. No more waiting for one team to finish before another can start.
**Flow connects the entire production pipeline**
With the introduction of **Flow Capture** (formerly Moxion) and **Flow Production Tracking** (formerly ShotGrid), we're bridging the gap between on-set and post-production data, enabling seamless asset management from the camera to final output.
Supported by open standards, Flow will integrate existing tools like Maya, as well as third-party solutions from SideFX, Avid, and The Foundry into an open ecosystem. Artists can access everything they need—storyboards, production data, and more—directly within their tools, eliminating the need to chase down files.
Over time, Flow will unify the entire production pipeline, making it easier to manage everything from pre-production to post, and beyond. This will improve efficiency and strengthen connections between production phases.
We're also thinking about games. Working with customers like Electronic Arts, we're gaining insights into how to enhance game production workflows, helping manage complex projects with many assets and stakeholders.
**An AI-powered future, maximizing the power of data**
By using data in a connected environment, we have more opportunities to leverage artificial intelligence to drive automation and boost productivity.
One example is **Generative Scheduling**, which automates what was once a time-consuming manual task. Instead of taking days, AI can deliver results in minutes, helping you plan, predict, and optimize resources efficiently. When changes happen, you can quickly understand the impact across your entire portfolio.
We’re also collaborating with **Wonder Dynamics** to automate creative workflows with AI. This includes automatically animating, lighting, and composing CG characters in live-action scenes. A new Maya plug-in allows users to seamlessly export CG characters into Wonder Studio, and then bring them back into Maya with full animation, camera, and lighting control. This level of automation makes it possible for studios of all sizes to create epic stories, previously only achievable by large-budget studios.
**Connected workflows and creative content are the future**
Autodesk is transforming the industry by connecting data, workflows, teams, and studios across the production pipeline. By streamlining collaboration, we help artists focus on what truly matters—their art.
At AU 2023, we’ll be sharing the full story of Flow and giving media and entertainment professionals the chance to connect, interact, and discover how visionary studios are using Autodesk’s design and make solutions to bring the full context of a production into focus and create incredible stories.
Among those visionaries is **Walt Disney Animation Studios**, who will join us on stage to give a sneak peek at the intricate process behind their latest masterpiece, *Wish*—a celebration of technology, animation, and human ambition.
I invite you to join our keynotes, theater sessions, and on-demand classes to learn more.
