As the demand for high-quality content continues to rise, and production scales in complexity, managing data, workflows, and teams has become more challenging than ever. With thousands of artists working across departments and studios, each project involves countless shots, assets, and scenes, making collaboration increasingly fragmented.
Artists use a wide range of tools that store data differently, leading to inefficiencies, delays, and limited creative freedom. However, the industry is on the verge of a major transformation. We are now connecting every stage of production, unifying people, data, and workflows to unlock new possibilities for innovation and creativity.
**Autodesk Flow sets the stage for a new, open way of working**
At Autodesk University, I’m excited to share how we’re building a more connected, creative, and resilient future with Autodesk Flow—the industry cloud for Media & Entertainment. Flow accelerates the development of connected workflows by placing data at the center of collaboration, not files.
At its core, Flow features a cloud-based data model built with open APIs, which structures all data created and consumed throughout the production pipeline. This model allows teams to capture, reuse, and track data, serving as the single source of truth for all assets, versions, and feedback.
From individual artists to entire departments, everyone can work simultaneously, eliminating bottlenecks and boosting productivity. The result? A more efficient, collaborative, and creative environment.
**Flow connects the entire production pipeline**
With the introduction of Flow Capture (formerly Moxion) and Flow Production Tracking (formerly ShotGrid), we’re integrating on-set and post-production data into the M&E data model. This enables seamless asset management from the camera to final output.
Supported by open standards, Flow will allow existing tools like Maya, as well as third-party software from SideFX, Avid, and The Foundry, to plug into an open ecosystem. Artists no longer need to chase files—they can access everything they need directly within their tools, including storyboards and production data.
Over time, we aim to unify the entire production pipeline, creating seamless workflows that extend beyond post-production. Flow will provide real-time access to production data, strengthening connections between different stages and improving efficiency.
We’re also focusing on game development, working closely with customers like Electronic Arts to enhance workflows and manage complex projects more effectively.
**An AI-powered future is possible**
By leveraging data in a connected environment, we’re unlocking new opportunities to use artificial intelligence for automation and productivity. One example is scheduling, where shifting team dynamics and budgets have traditionally been managed manually—often by one person.
With AI-powered Generative Scheduling on Flow, this process, which could take days, is now completed in minutes. You can predict, plan, and optimize resources to create space for creativity when it matters most. And when changes happen, you can quickly understand the impact—not just on a single project, but across your entire studio portfolio.
**Collaborating with AI to redefine creative workflows**
We’re also partnering with Wonder Dynamics to automate creative tasks using AI. For instance, we’re automating the animation, lighting, and composition of CG characters in live-action scenes. The new Maya plug-in allows users to seamlessly export CG characters from Maya into Wonder Studio, and then bring 3D scenes back into Maya with full animation, camera, and lighting data.
This level of integration was once only possible for large studios with big budgets. Now, with automation, even smaller studios can create epic stories. Combining AI with Flow opens up new creative possibilities for everyone.
**Connected workflows and creative content are the future**
Autodesk is transforming the industry by connecting data, workflows, teams, and studios across the production pipeline. Streamlining collaboration helps navigate the complexity of modern production, so artists can focus on what truly matters: their art.
At AU 2023, we’ll share the full story of Flow and offer media and entertainment professionals the chance to connect, learn, and discover how visionary studios are using our solutions to bring their productions to life.
One such studio is Walt Disney Animation Studios, which will join us to give a sneak peek at the making of *Wish*, a film that showcases the power of technology, animation, and human ambition.
I invite you to join our keynotes, theater sessions, and on-demand classes to explore the future of content creation.
