In April, the American Society of Civil Engineers released their quadrennial assessment of the state of civil infrastructure in the U.S., and the results were disheartening, earning a D+ grade overall. Some sectors, like roads and transit, fared even worse. Stephen Colbert even did a humorous take on it, but it's no joke. The urgent need for infrastructure upgrades isn't unique to America; it's a global issue.
The McKinsey Global Institute predicts that $60 trillion USD in infrastructure investment is required by 2030 to sustain global GDP growth. Yet, leading economies are expected to contribute only $24 trillion USD. Bridging this gap demands smarter ways to handle project complexity and reduce costs.
Today, Autodesk is launching Autodesk InfraWorks 360 Pro, a cutting-edge tool combining 3D modeling, visualization, and cloud-based collaboration technology. This platform aims to assist governments and civil engineers in accelerating critical infrastructure projects and ensuring sustained economic growth.
InfraWorks 360 Pro can swiftly generate designs by integrating various data types such as GIS, satellite images, and point clouds (including those produced by Autodesk ReCap). Its cloud capabilities enable geographically dispersed teams to collaborate on large-scale infrastructure models, accessible anytime, anywhere, via desktop or mobile devices. Cloud computing power also aids in performance analysis, simulations, and detailed visualizations for intricate projects.
These 3D visualizations make it easier for non-technical stakeholders, including government officials and the public, to understand designs, potentially speeding up approval processes. For instance, San Francisco recently utilized an earlier version of the software to gather feedback on redesigning Market Street.
Autodesk is also making the software more accessible through new quarterly subscription plans, allowing users to adjust based on project duration. This move aligns with recent initiatives like Autodesk Fusion 360, offering flexible monthly access to advanced 3D design tools for inventors and small businesses.
While infrastructure projects differ significantly in scale from individual inventions, the shared goal remains the same: empowering engineers with the tools necessary to tackle global challenges.
