How long can Isuzu 4JB1 still have?

At the end of the year, even with a few high-level people in the light-duty industry, Jingdong Jun savored a drink. During the dinner, Mr. Jun proposed a rather interesting topic: Is the light truck with the Isuzu 4JB1 engine still a medium-to-high-end light truck? After some arguments, a few deep sighs greeted the audience.

As we all know, the 4JB1 engine was developed by Isuzu in the late 1970s in the late 1970s. In January 1985, according to the arrangements of the State General Administration of Materials and China National Automotive Industry Corporation, China National Automobile Import and Export Corporation and Japan’s Isuzu Auto Co., Ltd. signed the “Isuzu N Series Truck Technology Transfer Agreement” and “Isuzu N” in Tokyo, Japan. Series Truck Driver Cab Technology Transfer Contract. According to the arrangements made by the State Development Planning Commission and China National Automotive Industry Corporation, Beijing No. 2 Automobile Manufacturing Plant and Southwest Light Vehicle Affiliated Company are deployed as two national projects, with Jiangxi Automobile Manufacturing Plant, Fujian Automobile Manufacturing Plant and Guangzhou Yangcheng Automobile Manufacturing Plant as three Regional projects. The 4JB1 engine is the standard power for the Isuzu N series light trucks and was introduced to the country with the above two contracts.

Subsequently, in March 1985, Beijing No. 2 Automobile Manufacturing Plant, China International Trust & Investment Corporation and Hong Kong Xiaoteji Company formed a joint venture of Beijing Light Vehicle Co., Ltd.; in June 1985, Chongqing Automobile Manufacturing Plant and Japan Isuzu Auto Co., Ltd. Che Lian Industrial Co., Ltd. established a joint venture with Chongqing Qingling Automobile Co., Ltd. In 1988, the China Automotive Technology and Research Center of China National Automotive Industry Corporation jointly developed the Isuzu N series light truck technology with the Jianghuai automobile manufacturing plant during the joint development of the chassis of a medium-sized passenger vehicle with the Hefei Jianghuai automobile manufacturing plant.

In the early 1990s, Japan’s Isuzu’s major shareholder, Itochu Corporation, entered the Chinese auto industry. In April 1993, Jiangling Isuzu Motors Co., Ltd. was jointly established by Jiangxi Automobile Factory, Isuzu Auto Co., Ltd. and ITOCHU Corporation. In October 1996, ITOCHU Corporation acquired a 20% stake in Beijing Light Vehicle Co., Ltd. from Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation. In the same year, the Beijing Automobile and Motorcycle United Manufacturing Co., a subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation, initiated the establishment of Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. on the basis of the former Shandong Zhucheng Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Plant and 100 units including Changchai Group Co., Ltd. and Wujin Diesel Engine Plant. At the beginning of this century, after Beijing Light Automobile Co., Ltd. was on the verge of bankruptcy, and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd. arranged a joint venture with Korea Hyundai Auto Co., Ltd., Beiqi Foton inherited the Isuzu N-series light truck technology and assets it held. . In the current market, Qingling Automobile, Jiangling Motors, Beiqi Foton Aoling, Jianghuai Shuai Ling and Guangqi Yangcheng are the light-card products of the five Isuzu pedigrees, which are inherited from the above sources. Among these, Qingling Automobile, Jiangling Motors, Beiqi Foton and JAC have put into production the Isuzu 4JB1 engine.

The author's whisper about the above history is based on three facts: 1. We have introduced the Isuzu 4JB1 engine technology for nearly 30 years; 2. The Isuzu 4JB1 engine has been discontinued in Japan and the updated engine products have been eliminated; 3. In addition to the Isuzu 4JB1 engine produced by Qingling Automobile, the quality of the 4JB1 engine produced by the other three companies did not reach the level of the Japanese Isuzu in the early 1980s. In 2010, China's total automobile production reached 18 million, and the output of light trucks was close to 2 million, of which the proportion of so-called "middle and high-grade" light trucks was less than 30%. It is rude to say that our annual light truck capacity of 2 million vehicles is only a low-end repetition. The quality of most of its products has a technological gap with the developed countries in the world for nearly 30 years. What's worse, this 4JB1 engine is at home in China. The life cycle has at least 10 years. For Chinese internal combustion engine engineers, we have to let our grandson continue to fight Isuzu. This tangle does not know if you can digest it.

Is it true that we do not really exceed the engine technology of Isuzu 4JB1? In fact, over the past 30 years, we have introduced the Italian Iveco SOFIM8140, the Japanese Nissan CQ32, the U.S. Nationwide NGD3.0, and the Italian VMR428, etc. in the 2.5 to 3.5 displacement range. If the “hard indicators” of engine power, output torque, fuel consumption level, and specific weight are considered, it seems that the Japanese Isuzu 4JB1 should have retired without fighting for a long time. However, these engine technologies have come to us like drinking melamine-rich milk. For those who have eaten whitening agent, there is no reliable engine produced by a self-owned brand such as TBO, MTTF, MTBF, and MMC. The sexual indicators have reached the international advanced level. The commitment of Japan’s Isuzu’s 600,000 kilometers without major repairs is not necessarily how good the Japanese do, but we have never paid much attention to this issue. In this sense, it is not that the Japanese use the Isuzu 4JB1 engine to fight our auto industry's face, but because we lack humiliation. When most of the internal combustion engine companies and automobile companies face consumers, they still stay on the level of “as long as the car is sold and everything will be fine”, and do not care about the user's total cost of use (TCO). This is precisely our own brand. The fundamental reason why auto products are always at a low level.
