Farmer Tan Guangyue made an environmentally friendly grain drying tower
At the start of this year, Tan Guangyue, a villager from Xiajiao Village in Xiajiabao Township, Qingyuan County, became a local figure. Every day, he attracted many villagers to his home, eager to see his self-invented, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly grain drying tower. This innovative device uses agricultural waste like straw and rice husks as fuel, making it both cost-effective and eco-friendly.
In the past, farmers in Laokan Village had to transport their grains to the fields for drying, which not only increased labor costs but also made the process inefficient. Tan Guangyue noticed that the straw scattered everywhere was being wasted, and he wanted to find a way to make better use of these resources. He dreamed of creating a system where farmers could dry their grains right in the village without having to travel far.
Despite having only a junior high school education, Tan Guangyue was determined to build a grain dryer on his own. He started by sketching a basic design inspired by traditional farm fire principles, but the first prototype didn’t work well. After several failed attempts, he continued to refine the machine. With each iteration, he learned more and improved the structure. Eventually, after six major revisions, he successfully completed the device on February 15th this year.
Word of his invention spread quickly, and soon villagers began bringing their grains to Tan’s house for drying. Now, he dries between 20 to 30 tons of grain daily and has even hired 12 local workers. He also involves others in collecting and transporting the straw and rice husks needed for fuel. The drying tower has not only brought him income but also helped reduce the drying costs for many farmers in the area.
Seeing the positive impact, Tan is now planning further improvements to increase the tower’s capacity. He told reporters that he still has many ideas in mind, such as using the exhaust heat from the drying tower to provide hot water for the villagers’ baths. His goal is to continue innovating and making life easier for his community while making good use of local resources.
