Farmer Tan Guangyue made an environmentally friendly grain drying tower

At the start of this year, Tan Guangyue, a villager from Xiajiao Village in Xiajiabao Township, Qingyuan County, became a local hero. Every day, he attracted many villagers to his home, eager to see his self-invented energy-saving and eco-friendly grain drying tower. This innovative device uses agricultural waste like straw and rice husks as fuel, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. In the past, farmers from nearby Laokan Village had to transport their grains to open fields to dry them, which not only increased labor costs but also took up valuable time. Tan noticed that the straw, which was often discarded or burned, was a wasted resource. He wanted to find a way to make better use of these materials while helping farmers dry their crops without leaving the village. Despite having only a junior high school education, Tan approached the challenge with great passion and determination. He began by designing a simple model based on the principles of farm stoves. However, his first attempt failed. After several more trials and adjustments, he still couldn't achieve the desired results. But rather than giving up, he sought advice from technical experts and continued refining his design. After six rounds of improvements, Tan finally succeeded on February 15th this year. The success of his invention quickly spread through the village. People started bringing their grains to his home for drying. Now, Tan dries between 20 to 30 tons of grain daily and has even hired 12 local villagers to help with the work. Additionally, he employs others to collect and transport the straw and rice husks used as fuel. The drying tower not only brought financial benefits to Tan but also helped reduce the drying costs for many farmers. As the project gained momentum, Tan saw potential for further development. He plans to enhance the tower's capacity and is already working on new ideas, such as building a public bathhouse that would use the heat generated by the drying tower to provide hot water for the villagers. "I still have many more things to do," he told reporters. "This is just the beginning."
