Oil price Gaoyuchai four-valve engine highlights leading edge
Oil prices have risen again. Starting from midnight on May 24th, the domestic refined oil price was increased once more, with gasoline, diesel, and aviation kerosene each rising by 500 yuan per ton. This marks the first adjustment in refined oil prices since March 26, and it's also the second time this year, with the largest increase so far. The retail price has gone up by over 4 cents. Recently, international oil prices have surged again, fluctuating around $70 per barrel. Experts predict that oil prices will remain high throughout the year.
As the automotive industry, especially the engine sector, is closely linked to refined oil, what are their views on the current situation of rising oil prices? To explore this, a reporter interviewed Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese diesel engine manufacturer.
According to Yuchai’s technical experts, the company has long been committed to "dedication to clean power and creating a harmonious environment," focusing on energy conservation and environmental protection. This sense of responsibility has driven Yuchai to make significant breakthroughs in technological innovation, introducing various energy-efficient and eco-friendly products. Among these, the four-valve technology has played a key role in reducing energy consumption.
Industry experts explain that reducing intake and exhaust resistance, along with properly matching the fuel injection nozzle and combustion chamber, can effectively lower engine energy use. The four-valve technology further increases the flow cross-sectional area for intake and exhaust under the same bore diameter, reducing resistance and improving intake capacity. It also enhances the match between the nozzle and combustion chamber, leading to better fuel atomization and more complete combustion. As a result, the four-valve design is an effective way to save energy and is widely used in developed countries. For China’s heavy trucks to gain more market share globally, adopting four-valve engines is essential. With the government promoting an energy-saving society, although four-valve engines are not yet mandatory, they may become a future requirement.
Yuchai has been developing its four-valve engine for several years, maintaining a low profile. In 2002, Yuchai conducted the first test of the YC6L four-valve engine. By the end of 2002, Dongfeng Liuzhou Automobile and Shaanxi Zhongqi had also developed prototypes. In 2003, the YC6L heavy-duty truck quietly entered the market, while the YC6M series was also being cultivated. Yuchai adopted a two-step strategy, using the two-valve 6M engine as a stepping stone before launching the four-valve version. The 6M two-valve engine gained user recognition, and with rising oil prices, Yuchai launched the four-valve version in the second half of 2005.
On February 26 this year, Yuchai launched its first Euro IV-compliant YC6L four-valve engine, marking a new phase in its strategic vision of “new Yuchai, new thinking, and new development.†On April 13, JAC held a heavy truck delivery ceremony in Shenzhen, supporting the Yuchai 6M four-valve engine, which took place during a significant moment in China’s reform history. This event caused a major stir in the industry, signaling the beginning of Yuchai’s “Spring Story†and the start of a new era for China’s internal combustion engine industry.
After May 18, the Yuchai 6M four-valve engine made a strong appearance at the Dongfeng Tianlong launch, becoming the highlight of the event.
The Yuchai four-valve heavy-duty engines currently on the market come in two series: the YC6L and YC6M. The YC6L offers power ranging from 280 to 350 horsepower, suitable for 10–13.7-meter passenger cars and 10–15-ton trucks, meeting Euro II, III, and IV emission standards. The YC6M provides 320–390 horsepower, fitting vehicles over 12 meters and 15-ton trucks, complying with Euro II and III requirements.
Both series are high-grade heavy-duty engines based on advanced global diesel engine technologies. They use FEV-specific combustion systems, P7100 fuel pumps for better atomization, wet cylinder liners, and European cooling piston technology for improved cooling performance. Patented dot-line meshing gear technology ensures quieter operation, and strict FEV mechanical development procedures guarantee reliability, longevity, and a 250,000 km (or 20-month) warranty.
The YC6M engine can be equipped with either BOSCH or domestic fuel pumps, depending on customer preference and budget.
Yuchai believes that real value comes from user satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Dealers report that the Yuchai 6M four-valve engine has created a big impact. Many customers now prefer Yuchai’s four-valve engines, with some purchasing them multiple times. A customer in Shandong consulted a technical expert and bought two Yuchai 6M engines, replacing his older models. He recognized the superior quality of the four-valve engine, comparing it to how a color TV differs from a black-and-white one. He found the engine more efficient and comfortable.
With China’s oil prices remaining high, Yuchai, which once led the internal combustion engine industry toward turbocharging, moderate cooling, and emission upgrades, has introduced the four-valve engine at the right time, showcasing its leadership. “To satisfy the public with excellence and leadership†is Yuchai’s mission. We believe Yuchai, with its strong sense of social responsibility, will continue to contribute significantly to building a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society.
