SAFE CHEMICAL HANDLING IMPROVES BOTTOM LINE IN A CALIFORNIA GOLF MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

Innovative Pump Design Saves Time, Gets Out More Product and Reduces Injuries Managing a golf course involves handling a wide range of liquids—from fertilizers to insecticides—and dealing with the challenges that come with storing and dispensing them. Mike Higuera, Jr., the manager of The Ranch Golf Course in San Jose, CA, faced these issues firsthand when working with large volumes of liquid chemicals. Spills, employee injuries, leaks, and product loss were common problems that made the job both risky and inefficient. The original setup involved 55-gallon drums stored horizontally in a chemical shed, with spigots mounted on the front. Positioning these heavy drums was not only difficult but also dangerous. Plus, because they stuck out into the room, the spigots were often bumped or even pulled off, leading to costly messes and potential safety hazards. “I tried a suction pump with an upright drum before,” Higuera explained. “But it required a long three-foot stroke, which was hard on the employees. They were constantly straining their muscles just to get the job done.” Determined to find a better solution, Higuera kept up with industry news and came across an article about Goat Throat pumps. Having tapped kegs in his youth, he recognized the technology’s potential—allowing drums to be positioned vertically and pressurized with short, easy strokes. He decided to give it a try. “Six years ago, I bought my first Goat Throat pump, and it was a game-changer,” he said. “Not only did it work well, but I’ve since added some useful options that make things even easier.” One such addition is a remote tap system, which uses flexible tubing to allow the receptacle to be placed directly on the floor. This is especially helpful when filling containers with heavy liquids like liquid iron, which weighs 10 pounds per gallon. Instead of holding a 5-gallon can (which would weigh 50 pounds), employees can simply set it down and fill it from a distance. Another upgrade was an adaptor with an air regulator that connects the pump directly to the course’s Compressor, eliminating the need for manual pumping altogether. “The results have been incredible,” Higuera said. “We’ve saved time, reduced injuries, and minimized product loss. The pumps paid for themselves almost immediately.”
