Innovative Pump Design Saves Time, Gets Out More Product and Reduces Injuries
Golf course management involves handling a wide range of liquids—from fertilizers to insecticides—and managing the challenges that come with them. Mike Higuera, Jr., the manager of The Ranch Golf Course in San Jose, CA, faced these issues firsthand when dealing with large volumes of liquid. Spills, employee injuries, leaks, and product loss were constant problems.
Initially, 55-gallon drums were stored horizontally in a chemical shed, with spigots on the front. This setup made it hard to handle the heavy drums, and the spigots often got accidentally knocked off, leading to costly and dangerous messes. “I tried a suction pump with an upright drum before,†Higuera explained. “But it had a long stroke and was tough to use. My team was constantly straining their muscles.â€
After reading trade publications, he came across information about Goat Throat pumps. Having tapped kegs in his youth, he was familiar with the concept of vertical drum positioning and easy pressurization. He decided to give it a try. “That was six years ago, and I’ve been happy with the results ever since,†he said.
Over time, he added some useful accessories. One was a remote tap connected via flexible tubing, allowing employees to fill containers directly on the floor. This is especially helpful when pouring heavy liquids like liquid iron, which weighs 10 pounds per gallon. Holding a 5-gallon can means lifting 50 pounds, which is much easier with the remote setup. Another addition was an air regulator adapter, which connects the pump to the course’s
Compressor, eliminating the need for manual pumping.
“The main benefit is that these pumps have saved us time, reduced injuries, and minimized product loss,†Higuera said. “They paid for themselves quickly and have become an essential part of our daily operations.â€
