The first chainsaws emerged in the 1920s. The introduction of motorized cutting tools revolutionized timber production, much like how the hand saw replaced the axe centuries earlier.

The history of forestry is deeply intertwined with human civilization. For thousands of years, forests have shaped and been shaped by society, evolving from mysterious, untamed spaces into vital economic resources. Today, they serve multiple roles—providing timber, offering environmental protection, and supporting recreational activities.

For many centuries, lumberjacks were among the lowest in social status. However, this changed with the arrival of the modern chainsaw. It not only improved efficiency but also elevated the profession’s image, transforming a laborer into a skilled operator respected for his expertise and hard work.

From the Axe to the Saw

The axe is one of the oldest tools used for cutting wood. Its design has evolved over time, reflecting changes in culture and technology. For centuries, it was essential for felling trees and remained a key tool well into the 19th century.

Around 5000 B.C., Germanic tribes created the first known saws by carving small teeth into curved flint pieces. While their exact use is unclear, these early tools may have been used for woodworking. With the discovery of copper, bronze became the material of choice for axes and saws. By around 750 B.C., iron began replacing bronze, but saws remained largely made of bronze for many years. These tools were more commonly used by craftsmen, doctors, and surgeons than in the forests.

As technology advanced, so did the tools used in forestry. The transition from hand tools to mechanical devices marked a significant shift in how people interacted with the natural world. This evolution continues today, with ongoing improvements in efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the forestry industry.
