3-Alarm fire at Proviso East High School in Maywood, 5-10-14
This is a report from Steve Redick: Proviso East High School, located at 807 S First Ave in Maywood, IL, was the scene of a significant fire. From what I could see from the outside, there was a fire in at least one classroom, and it appeared to have spread vertically up one or two floors. Firefighters were seen using long hose lines, and they added extra lengths once they entered the building. Prior to my arrival, reports indicated heavy smoke conditions inside. The only part of the operation I witnessed was the deployment of the MABAS MVU10 unit operated by the Lyons Fire Department. These units are similar to those used by the Chicago Fire Department. The building is quite old, which presented some unique challenges during the firefighting efforts. No injuries were reported. The fire was reported at about 9 p.m. at the west suburban high school, 807 South First Ave., and was elevated to a three-alarm fire at about 9:40 p.m., officials said. Speaking at the scene about 11 p.m., Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh said the fire caused “substantial damage†but that there were no reports of injuries. The fire started in a social office on the second level of the school, said Bronaugh Sunday morning. The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Bronaugh said.
