During his tenure, he organized a live fire exercise somewhere between 1985 and 1988. The location was on the east side of Kirk Road, just north of IL Route 38. At that time, the area around the intersection was still pretty undeveloped.
In the group photo, you can spot the current fire chief, Steve Olson, wearing a red helmet on the far left of the second row. Next to him is Jerry Koster, who later became a deputy chief, standing second from the right in the same row. Frank Johnson, the then-fire chief, is right in the middle of the first row, identifiable by his white T-shirt. All the other firefighters in red helmets have since retired. A few of the others featured in the picture now work with neighboring departments like Batavia, Carol Stream, Oak Park, Saint Charles, and Naperville.
Drew also sent along some additional photos. One shows a lone firefighter silhouetted against a raging fire, capturing the intensity of their training.
