Winter Energy Debt: Are You Worried About Your Bills?

As winter approaches, the nights grow longer and the air turns crisp, signaling the need to start thinking about optimizing energy use. While wholesale energy costs might be dropping, the increased use of domestic appliances and central heating remains a significant source of concern for many households. The sharp rise in energy bills over the past year has left numerous families questioning their ability to afford heating this winter. Aware of these worries, we recently conducted a survey to gauge the extent to which rising energy costs are affecting people across Britain. Based on the findings, we’ve put together a concise guide filled with practical tips to help keep your home warm while minimizing energy expenses. Our aim is to provide assistance in preparing for the colder months ahead. One striking aspect of our survey was the prevalence of what we call 'energy debt.' This refers to the financial strain caused by fluctuating energy prices over recent months. Among 1,000 participants from various regions of the UK, nearly two-thirds (62%) reported facing financial difficulties due to the increased energy costs of last winter. Moreover, 76% of those expressing concern were anxious about the upcoming energy expenses this winter, hoping to avoid further financial stress. For a quick overview of the survey results, check out the infographic below. In fact, nearly half (45%) of those surveyed upgraded their bedding last winter. A thicker duvet can significantly cut down on heating needs, potentially reducing energy bills. Layering thinner duvets or adding extra blankets achieves a similar effect. Instead of leaving the heating on all night, you can turn it on before bed to warm the room and rely on your bedding to retain warmth throughout the night. Hot Water Bottles to the Rescue Warming up with a hot water bottle is another effective strategy to save on energy costs. Placing a hot water bottle in your bed before sleeping warms your sheets efficiently. Additionally, having a hot water bottle handy during the day provides an instant warmth boost without needing to adjust the thermostat. Bleed Your Radiators Regularly bleeding your radiators is an often overlooked yet highly effective method to lower energy bills. Our survey revealed that 37% of respondents incorporate this into their routine to ensure efficient heating before winter hits. If you haven't tried this before, it's a valuable skill to learn, especially given current energy concerns. Radiators draw hot water from your boiler and distribute heat throughout your home. Over time, air bubbles can form within the pipes, blocking water flow and reducing efficiency. Bleeding your radiators removes these obstructions, improving performance and saving money. To do this: 1. Turn off the heating and confirm the radiators are cool. 2. Locate the bleed valve, usually a small metal square within a round nut at the top of the radiator. Use a bleed key to release trapped air. 3. Turn the key counterclockwise until air escapes, indicated by a hissing sound. 4. Once water flows, tighten the valve and repeat for all radiators. 5. Restart the heating system and verify all radiators are functioning properly. Draught-Proof Your Home Ensuring your home is fully draught-proof is another way to reduce heating costs. Our survey showed that 22% of respondents are already taking steps toward this. Draughts can often be noticeable in colder rooms, but sometimes they're subtle, allowing heat to escape and cold air to enter. Regular insulation checks are recommended to prevent unwanted draughts. Adequate insulation can make a noticeable difference in maintaining warmth. Even addressing roof issues and loose tiles can impact indoor temperatures, as noted by 12% of our survey participants. For short-term solutions, use draught excluders or spare blankets to block cold breezes from entering under doors. Opening curtains during the day allows sunlight to naturally heat the space, while closing them at night helps retain warmth. Dress Warmly Perhaps the simplest advice is to layer up indoors. Wearing jumpers and thick pajamas keeps you cozy even on the coldest days. Similarly, dressing appropriately for outdoor conditions prevents chills and reduces the urge to crank up the heat upon returning home. Strategic Heating Use Using your central heating strategically is one of the most efficient ways to stay warm without inflating energy bills. If you're only using a few rooms during the day, there's no need to heat the entire house. For instance, turning off radiators in unused bedrooms can lead to significant savings. Consider the times and duration you need to heat specific areas. Perhaps the living room doesn’t need constant heating; warming it for an hour after work might suffice. The same applies to bedrooms—warming them briefly before bed can keep you comfortable overnight. Another tip is to keep your boiler in frost protection mode and schedule regular servicing—34% of respondents already do this. These practices protect against burst pipes, ensuring comfort during holidays. Solar Panels as a Long-Term Solution We discovered that 7% of respondents have installed solar panels to mitigate energy costs. Contrary to popular belief, solar panels function well regardless of weather conditions, offering a sustainable solution to energy debt. Harnessing solar power reduces dependence on traditional energy sources, potentially powering household appliances and even selling excess energy back to the grid. Monitoring energy generation with a smart meter helps track peak usage times and optimize energy consumption. Over time, these savings can alleviate financial concerns. In fact, a quarter of respondents with solar panels felt no energy expense anxiety for the coming winter. Investing in solar panels offers independence from the grid while promoting sustainability.
