This is a report from Eric Haak, capturing the events of a devastating fire that broke out early Sunday morning (April 12) in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. Around 1:43 AM, the main fire alarm office received a report of a structure fire with people trapped at the address 22nd and Wolcott Avenue. The first responding units arrived just one minute after the fire was officially declared, finding flames already shooting through the roof. By 1:45 AM, the fourth battalion chief called for an EMS Plan I response, reporting heavy fire on all three floors. At 1:51 AM, Engine 2-2-1 assumed command and upgraded the response to a 2-11 Alarm approximately three minutes later.
Shortly before 2:00 AM, crews were ordered to evacuate the building due to escalating danger, and firefighters transitioned to a defensive firefighting strategy. For much of the operation, three master streams and multiple handlines were deployed. Tower Ladder 5 and Engine 23’s elevated nozzle covered Sector A, while Squad 1A focused its efforts on Wolcott in Sector D.
By 3:00 AM, the fire had spread to the cockloft area of the adjacent building on the B side. To combat this new threat, Tower Ladder 39 was brought in as a fourth master stream. Engines 23, 18, and 39 were actively pumping water onto the blaze. Fortunately, all 21 residents managed to escape unharmed. I apologize in advance if any details here are incorrect, but I believe this to be a reasonably accurate recount of the incident.
