Hi everyone,
This just came in from Dan McInerney. There was an emergency situation today at the Chicago Executive Airport involving a 1967 Cessna 310N. The aircraft had its front landing gear unlocked, which is quite unusual. Thankfully, both the Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments were on standby to assist.
According to Dan, the pilot managed an impressive feat by keeping the plane in the air for about 90 minutes to burn off excess fuel before attempting the landing. It’s commendable how well the pilot handled the situation. They managed to bring the aircraft down safely without any injuries to the two people onboard. However, there was some minor damage to the airframe, but nothing too serious.
I’ve attached some photos taken by Dan McInerney that really capture the event. You can see the plane coming in with the unlocked front landing gear. It’s quite remarkable how the pilot maintained control throughout the entire process. The fire departments were also ready and waiting nearby as a precaution.
There’s something about seeing these images that really puts things into perspective. It’s not every day you witness such a controlled emergency landing. The photos show the plane both mid-air and post-landing, giving a full view of what happened. It’s inspiring to see how skilled pilots and emergency responders work together to ensure safety.
Take a look at the photos below. They really tell the story of how everything unfolded today at the airport. Kudos to the pilot for their professionalism and to everyone involved for handling the situation so smoothly.
Best,
