House fire in Sycamore, 4-4-19

At around 9:56 PM last night, the Sycamore Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 1300 block of Janet Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames consuming most of the building. The first unit on scene, Engine 2, immediately deployed their deck gun and two 2.5-inch handlines to combat the fire on the B-side of the structure while also addressing concerns about potential spread to adjacent buildings. Engine 1 quickly followed suit, pulling hose lines to the D-side of the property. Thanks to swift action and teamwork, the initial fire was brought under control within an hour using water from the engine's onboard tanks. However, complications arose when it became apparent that the fire was fueled by natural gas emanating from the meter. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze until Nicor technicians arrived to isolate and shut off the gas supply. The severity of the situation prompted a general alarm response, bringing additional resources from neighboring departments such as DeKalb, Elburn, Genoa, Hampshire, Burlington, Cortland, Pingree Grove, and Hampshire. Mutual aid support was invaluable in managing the extensive damage. Despite the chaos, there were no injuries reported among residents or firefighters. Two individuals were briefly assessed for smoke inhalation but declined further medical attention. The aftermath revealed significant destruction, with estimated losses amounting to $300,000 for the primary structure and its contents. Adjacent homes also suffered collateral damage; specifically, the house at 1311 Janet Street sustained roughly $50,000 worth of harm due to intense heat exposure. Utility services like electricity and gas were restored later through efforts coordinated between ComEd and Nicor teams. As investigations continue, officials remain uncertain about the exact cause of the fire. It serves as a poignant reminder of how rapidly situations can escalate without proper precautions. Special thanks go out to all personnel involved—firefighters, police officers, public works staff, and utility workers—who worked tirelessly throughout the night to protect lives and property. Their dedication exemplifies professionalism at its finest.
