In his account, Sikes stated that the accelerator pedal on his Prius became stuck, leading to a loss of control. He claimed that the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably to over 95 mph and maintained this speed for approximately 23 minutes. During this time, he made a 911 call, explaining that the gas pedal was jammed and unresponsive. Despite following instructions from the operator, such as applying both the foot brake and the emergency brake, Sikes was unable to stop the vehicle.

While unintended acceleration due to floor mats catching on accelerator pedals has been a known issue, it is worth noting that the Prius was not part of the recall addressing this problem. Furthermore, the condition of the brake pads does not align with what would be expected if the brakes had been used forcefully for such an extended period. The front brakes still retain some material, while the rear brakes show minimal signs of wear.

Taking these findings into account, Toyota is beginning to cast doubt on the validity of Sikes' report. Although they are not outright dismissing his claim, the investigative team remains skeptical. They acknowledge the anecdotal evidence provided by law enforcement officers who reported detecting the smell of burning rubber at the scene, yet the vehicle's backup systems and diagnostic tests continue to yield normal results.
