I recently came across some fascinating pieces of history from the Cicero Fire Department, all shared by Joseph Salerno. It’s amazing how these old photos and stories can bring back so many memories. In one of the images, there’s a picture of me when I was just six months old in 1970, sitting on a hook and ladder truck. Those were such memorable times growing up around the firehouse.
One of the newspaper clippings shows a smashed-up fire truck. That particular vehicle was involved in an accident when my grandfather was thrown off while responding to a call. I believe it was a Seagrave model. Those early days with the department were filled with both challenges and triumphs, but they shaped who we are today as firefighters.
Looking through these photos, I can almost feel the weight of tradition pressing down on me. Each image tells its own story—some of camaraderie, others of bravery under pressure. There's something deeply moving about seeing how far we've come since those early years.
The first photo shows young kids playing near the fire station, their laughter echoing off the brick walls. Another captures firefighters gathered around a table, deep in conversation over coffee. Then there’s the one where everyone is suited up and ready for action, standing tall next to their gleaming red trucks.
It’s incredible to see how much dedication and sacrifice went into protecting our community back then. These aren’t just pictures; they’re windows into another era, full of grit and determination. As I scroll through them now, I’m reminded of why I chose this path—to continue honoring those who paved the way before us.
There’s also a particularly poignant moment captured in one of the snapshots—a firefighter carrying an elderly woman out of harm's way during a blaze. It’s moments like these that remind us why firefighting isn't just a job—it’s a calling. And though technology has advanced significantly since those days, the core values remain unchanged: courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
These artifacts from Joseph Salerno’s collection serve as powerful reminders of our shared heritage. They connect past generations with present ones, fostering a sense of continuity and purpose. By preserving these memories, we ensure that future firefighters will understand where they stand within the larger narrative of service and protection.
As I sit here reminiscing about these snapshots, I can’t help but think about how much has changed—and yet stayed the same—over the decades.
