Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. recently celebrated a major milestone as China's first 400-foot jack-up drilling platform, "Offshore Oil 941," was officially handed over. The event, attended by representatives from China National Offshore Oilfield Services Co., Ltd., China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry International Trading Co., Ltd., and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd., marked a significant achievement in the development of large offshore oil equipment under China’s "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." This advanced platform features the largest scale, highest level of automation, and the deepest working depth among domestic platforms, representing a breakthrough for national energy security and offshore oil resource development.
Deep-sea oil operations have become a key focus for the offshore industry. For many years, China's offshore oil exploration and development were limited by technology and equipment, restricting operations to shallow waters. Currently, the deepest water depth for existing offshore platforms is only 80 meters. As China shifts its focus from offshore to deep-sea oil and gas resources, the demand for advanced offshore equipment has significantly increased.
In March 2004, Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industries signed a contract with CNOOC to build two 400-foot drilling platforms. These platforms, known as JU2000, are among the most advanced in the world. The COSL941 model is fully automated, featuring a 75-foot cantilever beam and the ability to drill more than 30 wells at once. With a rated water depth of 400 feet and a drilling capacity of up to 122 meters, these platforms are designed to withstand harsh sea conditions. To meet such high standards, Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry trained over 100 welders with 6GR qualifications and successfully solved critical technical challenges, including pile leg construction, central control systems, and mud management.
The 167-meter pile legs required precise lifting and assembly, involving over 1,700 components. A dedicated R&D team was established, and strict quality control ensured that all technical issues were addressed efficiently. This project not only showcased the company's technological capabilities but also solidified its reputation in the marine engineering sector.
In recent years, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group has expanded into the marine engineering market while continuing to grow its shipbuilding business. It has delivered various projects, including FPSOs, inspection vessels, underwater conduit ships, and submersible and air-cushion drilling platforms. These projects have earned trust from both domestic and international clients. This year alone, marine engineering production is expected to account for about 30% of the company’s total value. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. currently holds four contracts for similar drilling platforms, and it recently served as the general contractor for two platforms built for a U.S. company—marking a historic first for a Chinese shipyard.
