This is Sgt. Grandon from the Johnston, IA Police Department. I’m reaching out to invite you to our annual event, *Smokin’ Heroes*, a fun and competitive smoking competition that takes place during the Johnston Green Days festival. The event runs from the evening of June 18th (rules and meat distribution) through June 19th (tasting and judging).
This year’s competition is not just about great food and friendly rivalry — it’s also a chance to support a meaningful cause. All proceeds from the event will go toward helping local youth from Johnston attend an international camp called *TOKA* in Peja, Kosovo, our sister city. This unique cultural experience offers students a chance to connect with another country, learn about different traditions, and build lifelong memories — something you won’t find in a classroom.
The competition brings together teams from the police department, fire department, military, and other public safety organizations. Each team will be given pork loin, ribs, and whole chicken to smoke, and they’ll compete for bragging rights, the *Smoking Heroes Championship Belt*, and cash prizes.
To participate, your team needs at least one member from law enforcement, fire, military, or another public safety field. Last year’s event drew around 1,500 to 2,000 attendees, and we hope to see even more this year. It's a great way to enjoy some delicious food, meet fellow community members, and support a wonderful cause.
