This is Sgt. Grandon from the Johnston Police Department in Iowa. I’m reaching out to invite you to our annual event, **Smokin’ Heroes**, a fun and competitive barbecue contest that takes place during the Johnston Green Days Festival. The event runs from the evening of June 18th (for rule announcements and meat distribution) into June 19th for the actual tasting and judging.
This year’s competition is not just about great food—it’s also a way for us to support a meaningful cause. All proceeds from the event go toward helping local youth from Johnston attend an international camp called **TOKA**, where they’ll have the opportunity to visit our sister city, Peja, Kosovo. It’s a unique cultural experience that can’t be replicated in a classroom, and it aligns with our department’s mission to contribute positively to the community.
The competition brings together teams from the police, fire, and military departments, all competing for bragging rights, the **Smoking Heroes Championship Belt**, and cash prizes. We’ll provide the pork loin, ribs, and whole chicken, but your team must include at least one member from law enforcement, fire services, or the military.
Last year’s event drew around 1,500 to 2,000 attendees, and we’re hoping to make this year even bigger. Whether you're a seasoned pit master or just looking for a fun day out, this is a great chance to enjoy some delicious food, meet other community members, and support a great cause.
