Autodesk Foundation Prepares for the Future Workforce With the Aspen Institute’s Future of Work Initiative, Focusing on U.S. Policy

Hosts a successful forum on Automation & AI for Good with Village Capital

Today at AU London, we’re excited to share that the Autodesk Foundation is continuing its commitment to workforce development by partnering with the Aspen Institute’s Future of Work Initiative. This nonpartisan effort is focused on exploring how automation and emerging technologies are reshaping the labor market and identifying practical policy solutions to support workers. By engaging with federal, state, and local policymakers, the initiative aims to shape a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to the future of work.

As new technologies and automation become more integrated into our daily lives, they are already transforming industries and job roles. These changes are expected to accelerate in the coming years, making it essential to proactively address the challenges and opportunities ahead. We believe that by investing in knowledge and supporting innovative solutions, we can help workers adapt and thrive in this evolving landscape.

The Aspen Institute’s Future of Work Initiative focuses on creating sustainable solutions at all levels of government to:

  • Strengthen economic security for both traditional and independent workers
  • Expand access to high-quality education and training programs
  • Encourage long-term business strategies over short-term gains

This partnership builds on our earlier investment in workforce development, which was announced last fall at AU Las Vegas. In collaboration with Village Capital, the Autodesk Foundation launched a new initiative aimed at supporting startups that use automation and machine learning to create positive impacts for workers.

Since announcing the partnership in November, we’ve received numerous applications from innovative startups leveraging AI to empower individuals in the age of automation. Ten of these companies were invited to San Francisco last week for a day-long forum titled Automation & AI for Good, where they presented their ideas and received mentorship from industry leaders.

Jean Shia, Head of Portfolio and Investment, at the Autodesk Foundation, speaks to a mentor at the Village Capital Automation and AI for Good forum in San Francisco.

During the event, we had the opportunity to hear from each of the startups and provide guidance as they work to drive meaningful change. Three companies were selected as winners and received funding and mentorship from Autodesk executives and other tech leaders. The winning startups were:

  • Green Badger – A cloud-based platform offering automation and compliance tools tailored for the green construction sector.
  • Roadbotics – A machine learning-powered solution for automated road condition assessments, revolutionizing infrastructure maintenance globally.
  • Quartolio – An AI-driven knowledge management tool that extracts insights from millions of open-access articles, datasets, and patents to support researchers.

Winning startups are represented by their founders at the June 12th forum in San Francisco. From L to R: Benjamin Schmidt; Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer, RoadBotics (Peer Choice); Tommy Linstroth, Founder, CEO Green Badger (Jury Choice); and Nicole Bishop; Founder, CEO Quartolio (Audience Choice)

These partnerships with the Aspen Institute and Village Capital are part of our broader mission to prepare the workforce for the future. By supporting organizations that use automation and AI for good, we hope to not only learn from their innovations but also help shape a more equitable and skilled workforce for tomorrow.
