Chemical industry becomes the main force in controlling desertification

At the International Conference on Desertification Control Science and Technology held from October 14 to 16, it was revealed that China's efforts to combat desertification go far beyond the agricultural and forestry sectors. Various fields, including chemistry, biology, and electricity, are now actively involved in addressing this critical environmental challenge. Notably, the chemical industry has emerged as a key player in the fight against desertification. According to An Chengxin, the conference's honorary chairman, China is one of the most severely affected countries globally, with over 110 regions impacted by desertification. As of 2004, China had approximately 2.662 million square kilometers of degraded land—equivalent to 2.5 times the country’s total arable land—and accounted for 27.46% of its total land area. Around 400 million people were affected, with annual direct economic losses reaching about 54 billion yuan. In 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao emphasized that desertification control is a long-term national strategy essential for China’s sustainable development. The chemical industry has been deeply engaged in various aspects of desertification management. For example, the Inner Mongolia Boyuan Investment Group, a major player in natural gas, coal, and chemical industries, has invested nearly 40 million yuan over the past three years to establish a green barrier in the Mu Us Desert. Similarly, Elion Resources Group has expanded into both energy and chemical industries while also developing desert-based enterprises, including more than 220 million mu of licorice cultivation and over 20 pharmaceutical production lines. Yuntianhua Group Co., Ltd. has also expressed plans to contribute to desertification control, while Beijing University of Chemical Technology and China Agricultural University are collaborating on postgraduate programs focused on desert plant research. They have studied the extraction of medicinal herbs from these plants. Moreover, chemical professionals play a crucial role in research teams organized by the China Desertification Research Center and the China Desertification Control Foundation. Some experts even believe that advanced chemical technologies may hold the key to ultimately controlling desertification.
