Design of Intelligent Valve Electric Actuator Controller

Abstract: This paper presents an intelligent controller designed for electric actuators used in valve systems. The controller is based on a 8-bit microprocessor from Motorola, the MC68HC908SR12, and integrates power electronics to drive the motor. It combines automatic control, manual adjustment, and real-time status monitoring into a single intelligent system, making it suitable for various industrial control valves. Key words: valve electric actuator; intelligent controller; MC68HC908SR12 Introduction Water, steam, oil, and other fluids are closely related to industrial development, and their application in pipeline systems is essential. Valves are indispensable components in such systems. With the advancement of industrial automation, traditional manual methods have become inadequate for many applications. To achieve efficient pipeline management, electric valve systems play a crucial role. In certain scenarios, valve control goes beyond simple on/off operations and involves precise positioning and flow regulation, which demands higher intelligence from the actuator. This paper introduces a microprocessor-based control system that enables intelligent operation of electric valve actuators. 1. System Working Principle and Functions In practical applications, control valves often need to open or close based on specific requirements, sometimes adjusting to a certain degree or following dynamic patterns. Traditional analog control methods rely on current or voltage levels to represent valve position. However, due to time delays and fluctuating parameters, the displayed position often differs from the actual position, leading to inaccuracies [3]. Additionally, the limited information provided by analog systems hinders system debugging and maintenance. To address these issues, this paper proposes a digital-based intelligent control system. The intelligent controller, as shown in Figure 1, uses a Motorola microcontroller along with peripheral chips to create a position control unit. It receives a standard DC signal (e.g., 4–20 mA) and processes it through A/D conversion before sending it to the microprocessor. The microprocessor then controls the display unit and drives an AC motor based on the processed data. The system also supports remote digital control via PC commands and allows local manual adjustments through the HMI interface. Main functions include: (1) Integrated design supporting various input signals (4–20 mA, 4–12 mA, 12–20 mA, 0–5 V, 1–5 V) and isolated output feedback. (2) Simulation run based on user-defined flow characteristics. (3) Fault detection, alarm, and protection features for open circuit conditions. (4) Digital display showing control signal, valve position, and fault type. (5) RS485 communication for remote configuration and data visualization. (6) Automatic stroke tuning and self-calibration of input/output signals. 2. System Hardware Components The intelligent controller is designed with high reliability, strong anti-interference capability, and cost-effectiveness. At its core, it uses the 8-bit microcontroller MC68HC908SR12, while the main motor control circuit leverages power electronics technology. This combination ensures stable and accurate performance in industrial environments.
