Introduction
The A/C Compressor Evaluation Test Machine (CETM) is designed to evaluate compressors without the operator needing to be familiar with the design and functionality of compressors. The 2017 updated CETM machine is manufactured for compressor manufacturers and remanufacturers with enhanced automation and capabilities. The test simulates the loads that would be placed on a compressor in an actual vehicle air conditioning system. It requires a computer loaded with the TDS Compressor Evaluation Software (TCES).

A list of compressor models is included in the software for convenience, but it is possible to test any compressor with a given pulley diameter and displacement per revolution. There's no need to know if the compressor is fixed or variable—the machine can determine the difference and run the correct test for either type.

Quick Start
The CETM is user-friendly. Mount the compressor on the universal bracket, align the bracket with the pulley, and ensure the belt is straight. The compressor should be oiled, and any excess oil drained. Connect the hoses properly. While measuring the crank case pressure isn't required, it can be beneficial for diagnostics.

Start the program and confirm communication between the machine and the computer. This is indicated by the status color on the DL405 PLC Communications panel changing from red to green.

The software includes three screens: the Variable Animation Screen, Setup Screen, and Performance Report Screen. The Variable Animation Screen provides a view of the interior of a generic variable displacement compressor. The Setup Screen shows input calibration, and the Performance Report Screen allows for entering the compressor clutch diameter.

Theory of Operation
A car air conditioning compressor functions as a pump moving gas through a closed system. For the CETM to test various types of compressors, the system must be programmable to produce similar results within a specified range. This is achieved by entering displacement per revolution and pulley diameter on the Performance Report screen. The drive motor speed adjusts accordingly.

The test mimics real-world conditions. When the test starts, current is sent to an air pressure transducer to adjust suction pressure to approximately 3 bar. If the compressor is variable, the internal mechanical control valve should be set at the factory to match the crankcase pressure to the suction pressure.

Data and Results
The CETM offers two methods to review test results. The first method involves reviewing indicators such as "Flow Result" and "Control Valve" on the Performance Report screen. These provide an estimate of the compressor's performance. The second method allows experienced operators to analyze pressure curves and power draw using graphical fields on the Performance Report screen.
